Weight Control

We all know that diets don't work. We all know that weight control is not rocket science but a simple matter of "eat less - move more"!

So why is it so hard to achieve?

Of course there are lots of reasons why people get over weight but basically human beings cannot stop eating altogether and just do without food, so over consumption is often more about habits, attitudes and mind set than anything else. These are the aspects that require attention in order to achieve significant and long lasting change.

Some people comfort eat

Some people use food as an emotional support in an attempt to change the way they feel

Some people use food as a reward

And many of us learned some really unhelpful lessons about food in childhood!
If you are ready to change. whatever your “reasons” for being overweight, I would love to help you!

Myself I have been a size 18 and I have been a size 10 and now I am a happy, healthy 12-14. So I am not one of those who have no first hand knowledge or experience of what it is like to have "issues with weight and body image confidence".
If you are ready to change. I would love to help you!

I offer no nonsense, straight talking weight control programmes that combine the power of hypnotherapy with effective health coaching techniques. These are based on tried and tested methods.

These programmes are not for everyone because I “take no prisoners” when it comes to getting results.

I offer help and support in a compassionate but not a patronising way.

I care about you and respect you, but I don’t care or have any respect for your old excuses!

Just because you are fat I don’t think you are stupid so I won’t treat you as if you are.

If you follow the programme you will lose weight. If you don’t you will stay fat and probably continue to get even fatter.

If you are sufficiently fed up with being the way you are then I would love to work with you to help re-train your mind so that you can have a better relationship with your body.

“Denise Collins is a true professional who offers her clients a service that is always aligned to helping them get a positive result.” Says Steve Miller, presenter of Sky TV’s “Fat Families” and author of “Get of your arse and lose weight” (plus other titles.)

Depression

It is estimated that round 20% of the population may be suffering from some kind of depression at any one time. Depression appears to be more common in the developed world and is on the increase amongst young people.

Types of Depression

Definitions of depression are not clear cut. Symptoms are similar between them but vary in intensity. Clinical depression is the most intractable form. Clinical depression is  where there is no known or apparent cause. It appears to develop entirely from within the person. Reactive depression happens as a result of some kind of external factor. This is the type of depression a person may experience following a trauma or a loss of some kind.  Anxiety and depression are often co morbid conditions. That is people who are depressed often experience anxiety and people who are anxious often experience depression. There is research to indicate that there is a genetic factor in some cases. There certainly appears to be increased susceptibility where depression exists in a parent. The development of depression can sometimes be traced back to childhood experiences.

Symptoms

Some common symptoms are sleep disturbance, either waking early or being unable to get back to sleep, or sleep being disturbed by pessimistic thoughts. Alternatively some people sleep excessively. Appetite is often affected, either losing interest in food altogether or comfort eating. Lack of enthusiasm, interest or enjoyment in previously satisfying activates is also common.  Although symptoms may vary. Pessimistic thinking is the norm as may be feelings of guilt, shame, anger or resentment.  Lack of motivation, feelings of hopelessness and lack of self esteem are all common.

Hypnotherapy and depression

Hypnotherapy is a complimentary therapy and therefore should not be regarded as an alternative to consulting your GP for treatment. If you are under the care of a psychiatrist, hypnotherapy will not be suitable for you. Some forms of hypnotherapy may be unsuitable for anyone experiencing depression e.g.” hypno – analysis” as this can compound problems.

A suitably qualified and trained hypnotherapist will support you in terms of specific goals e.g. addressing sleep problems, dealing with negative thoughts or unhelpful perceptions, releasing old negative emotions such as anger and resentment, working to improve self confidence and increase self esteem.  The actual process should be individualised to your specific needs with the hypnotherapist working at your pace.

Why choose Denise Collins as your hypnotherapist?

Therefore, I have both professional experience and relevant training, plus I also have personal experience of managing the condition myself.”

Information & statistics

·         Depression is more common in women than men. 1 in 4 women will require treatment for depression at some time, compared to 1 in 10 men. The reasons for this are unclear, but are thought to be due to both social and biological factors. It has also been suggested that depression in men may have been under diagnosed because they present to their GP with different symptoms. Source;  National Institute For Clinical Excellence (2003)

·         Women are twice as likely to experience anxiety as men. Of people with phobias or OCD, about 60% are female. Source; The Office for National Statistics Psychiatric Morbidity report (2001)

·         Men are more likely than women to have an alcohol or drug problem. 67% of British people who consume alcohol at ‘hazardous’ levels, and 80% of those dependent on alcohol are male. Almost three quarters of people dependent on cannabis and 69% of those dependent on other illegal drugs are male. Source; The Office for National Statistics Psychiatric Morbidity report 2001)

Therapy is better than money for making people happier

Psychological therapy is more than 30 times more effective at making people happier than a lottery win or a large pay rise, according to newly-published research.

The study conducted by the University of Warwick and the University of Manchester found that society vastly overestimates the importance of money in improving well-being and mental health.

Chris Boyce, of the University of Warwick, and Alex Wood, from the University of Manchester, conducted the research by comparing large data sets in which thousands of people had reported on their well-being.

They then examined how well-being changed due to therapy, compared to the results of sudden increases in income.

The researchers found that an £800 course of therapy had such a large effect on well-being that it would take a pay rise of over £25,000 to achieve an equivalent increase in happiness.

Entitled Money or Mental Health: The Cost of Alleviating Psychological Distress with Monetary Compensation versus Psychological Therapy, the study also looked at deteriorating mental health despite huge economic gains in developed countries over the past five decades.

University of Warwick researcher Chris Boyce said: "We have shown that psychological therapy could be much more cost-effective than financial compensation at alleviating psychological distress. This is not only important in courts of law, where huge financial awards are the default way in which pain and suffering are compensated, but has wider implications for public health and well-being. Often the importance of money for improving our well-being and bringing greater happiness is vastly over-valued in our societies."

Scientific research indicates you can be 40% happier!

“Pursuing happiness: The architecture of sustainable change” (2005)

Lyubomirsky, Sheldon & Schkade.  Review of General Psychology

Research indicates that 50% of overall sense of happiness is genetically determined.

10%  is due to general circumstances e.g. Income, education

But 40% is derived from day to day behaviour and cognition which can be improved.

Some good reasons for using hypnosis.

During hypnosis you are more receptive to positive suggestions. Personal beneficial suggestions can help free you from negative limitations that in the past you may have unconsciously accepted. Most people now days want to be in charge of their own mental, emotional and physical wellbeing. Rather than handing responsibility for this over to someone else. Most intelligent people don’t want to be a recipient of “therapy” but instead want to be proactive partners with a professional in establishing and maintaining their own wellbeing. Hypnosis can help with anything in which the mind has an influence. So its range is far wider than is sometimes thought.
Scientific Backing. "Hypnosis is supported by more scientific research than any other complementary therapy". (The Which? Guide to Complementary Therapies, 2002). Hypnosis has been recognised as valid by the British Medical Association since 1955.
More rapid results. Using just a very light to medium state of trance, similar to every day trances like day-dreaming, absorption in a book or TV programme, enables change to take place more rapidly when using mere talking therapies alone. This means results are often experienced in surprisingly brief period of time.

Collaborative partnership
Professional hypnotherapists work with clients in a spirit of partnership and cooperation. The aim is to guide you to create better long lasting beneficial choices for yourself.

Update your mental files
If you have a habit, condition, behaviour, feeling or thought you cannot change yourself, a professional hypnotherapist can assist you in updating your mental files so your responses are more appropriate to the present rather than based on outdated mental programs from the past.

Individual bespoke assistance Each client is an individual therefore a professional hypnotherapist will provide a designer service to suit you, as opposed to an off-the-peg solution. They will listen carefully to what is currently going on for you and what you'd like to change, and then tailor the techniques used specifically to meet your requirements.

The Mind-Body Connection Professional hypnotherapists work from a psychological perspective and an understanding of the mind-body connection based on up to date neuroscience.
Value for Money Sessions with a professional hypnotherapist are not cheap. However they do represent great value for money because the beneficial therapeutic effects of professional hypnotherapy is generative and continue long after the sessions have finished.
